July 2010
I had the privilege of representing our Chapter at the Louisiana Council of Chapters’ (LCOC) meeting last month. The Council offers MOAA chapters from across the state the opportunity to meet and discuss topics of interest to all MOAA members. The guest speaker at this LCOC meeting was Captain Bud Schneeweis, USCG (Ret). He is the Director of Benefits Information and Financial Education Department at MOAA National. He discussed with us many issues MOAA National is working on our behalf. What I found to be of importance from the discussions is the critical role we, as MOAA members, play in supporting and providing creditability to National as they take issues of importance to us to our elected representatives in Washington.
Captain Schneeweis stressed again and again how we provide the “Powerful Voice” with which MOAA National speaks in Washington. Senators and representatives we elect listen when MOAA National speaks on behalf of hundreds of thousands of active duty, Guard/Reserve and retired citizens across our great Nation. He stresses the accessibility we provide MOAA National by opening doors to Senate and Congressional offices because we elect those who represent us in Washington. Without members, Captain Schneeweis stated MOAA National would not be the number one ranked most influential organization in Washington representing issues of importance to active duty, Guard/Reserve and retired.
We learned from Captain Schneeweis during the meeting that MOAA National is offering a ten percent discount to all members who buy a life time membership in MOAA. I learned long ago that lifetime membership is a valuable investment. Not only does it insure my membership will never laps but it also insures my wife will always be able to benefit from all MOAA does for us. From my perspective, lifetime membership is a necessity. In addition, MOAA National will pay our Chapter twenty dollars every time a new or existing member upgrades to a lifetime membership. Lifetime membership insures I will always be part of that “Power Voice” we provide to MOAA National.
I was surprised when Captain Schneeweis informed us that four of every five MOAA National members are not a member of a local chapter. Local chapter membership has many benefits. As a local chapter member, we are represented to our elected state representatives not only through the LCOC, but also through the Louisiana Veterans’ Coalition (LVC). The Coalition is comprised of many groups, of which the LCOC is one, representing active duty, Guard/Reserve and retirees in Louisiana. Its purpose is to ensure issues of importance to all serving and who have served are brought before those who represent us in Baton Rouge. The LVC also works closely with the Louisiana Department of Veterans’ Affairs, the State agency concerned with issues of importance to current and retired members of the Armed Forces, National Guard and Reserves.
Captain Schneeweis emphasized the importance of MOAA membership at both the national and local levels. Each of us has the ability to positively influence our collective future by encouraging our friends and acquaintances that are eligible for MOAA membership and are not to join and to join at both the local and national levels.
As always, I look forward to working with all of you to keep our Chapter the best in all of MOAA and to always keep MOAA National a “Powerful Voice”.
