2010 March
Last month’s Affiliate contained an article that addressed an issue of importance to us all. The article addressed one on MOAA National’s goals for 2010, increasing membership. The 2010 “Give Me Ten” membership drive program is now underway in earnest. This year’s program will focus on recruiting those eligible for membership who are not members and to ensure all national MOAA members not affiliated with a local chapter become associated with their local chapter. Our Chapter will give a free one year membership to a new individual eligible for membership who joins our Chapter and MOAA National will do the same. In addition MOAA National will offer a free one year membership in our Ark-La-Tex Chapter to those national members in our area who are not Chapter members. MOAA National will reimburse our Chapter the cost of their annual membership when they join our Chapter. Therefore, I ask you, if you know of an individual eligible for membership or a member of MOAA National who is not a member of our Chapter, please let them know of these special opportunities to join you and me as members of MOAA and of our Ark-La-Tex Chapter.
Why are MOAA National and our Chapter offering these incentives to join? VADN Ryan eloquently stated the rational for membership in this month’s Military Officer. He stated that since last October, MOAA members concerned about health care reform alone generated more than 130,000 messages to Congress asking our representatives to safeguard military/VA beneficiaries’ health care benefits, protect these benefits from taxation, improve access to providers and ensure long-term sustainment of Medicare and TRICARE For Life. He further stated that MOAA is preparing for “major battle” over these and similar issues of importance to all of us. Ensuring our elected officials listen to our concerns is a two part undertaking. First, our concerns must be made known. Second, these concerns must be clearly transmitted to our elected officials by constituents in sufficiently large numbers to ensure their attention.
MOAA National is, as VADM Ryan expressed in his article, ensuring our concerns are made known to our elected officials at all levels of government. MOAA National is constantly championing issues of importance to us to our elected representatives. Our membership in MOAA National gives VADM Ryan and the MOAA staff the emphasis needed to ensure our elected representatives hear our concerns. Membership in local chapters correspondingly allows our Louisiana Council of Chapters in concert with other veteran’s organizations in the state to keep our concerns before our local representatives. This is why membership at both the local and national level is so critically important.
I can think of no better way to invest in our collective futures than membership in MOAA and similar organizations that cause our elected representatives to know and listen to us on issues important to us. Membership costs in MOAA are a tiny price to pay for such a huge investment in the future. Talk to your friends who are not members and show them the importance of membership.
As always, I look forward to continuing work with all of you in the future. It is my pleasure to serve as your president. Thank to all members for all you do for our Chapter.
